Scripting

One of the main codes and conventions of social realism films is minimalistic scripting. Therefore, we made the collective decision to not rely on a script but rather have a strong idea of what we wanted the actors to say. Whilst we still had some scripting, the large majority of speech was improvised after having a discussion with the actors regarding what we wanted them to say and imply.

The scene where Debbie is shown on the phone in front of a run-down wall was completely improvised and unscripted. This was because during filming we found the wall and really liked the lighting and atmosphere it provided. We thought that it was extremely appropriate and so we created an extra, improvised scene.
